Dental Health Week 2018
10 August 2018
Dental Health week this year had the theme of “Watch Your Mouth”.
Its aim was to educate Australians about the importance of maintaining good oral health in every aspect of their lives. The emphasis was on maintaining a healthy mouth, and basic techniques to achieve this.
Brushing is more than squirting some toothpaste and scrubbing back and forth for 30 seconds or so. Brushing works best when the bristles are directed at 45 degrees to the gum line. The brush is moved in small gentle circles around the base of all teeth. This should take about 2 minutes.
Flossing is something most people forget. It is as important as brushing. Floss should be held between fingers and gently passed up and down to level of gums between teeth. For patients who find this difficult; floss holders, interproximal brushes and other special devices are available.
Toothpaste is also plays a role. Fluorides help to reduce the total amount of tooth decay and the speed at which it occurs. A fluoride containing toothpaste is strongly recommended. Special tooth pastes for sensitive teeth and dry mouth are also available,
A healthy diet is also essential for a healthy mouth and body. Eat a balanced diet, drink lots of water, avoid snacking between meals will go a long way in creating a healthy mouth (and body).
Regular dental visits will also help. Problems can be treated early and more simply.
